The Eiffel Tower was almost torn down 20 years after it was built... and was saved by radio waves! 
Gustave Eiffel designed it as a temporary entrance arch for the 1889 World's Fair. To save his creation from demolition in 1909, he installed a radio telegraph antenna on top, convincing the city it was an essential military communication tower.
Bonus: He also built a secret private apartment for himself at the very top, which you can still peek into today!
