Worldwide Electricity Checker

Travel Plug & Voltage Checker

Compare your home plug with the sockets and electricity supply at your destination.

Adapter needed? The checker compares whether your plug shape fits the destination socket.
Voltage safe? Always compare the destination voltage with the input rating on your own device.

Understand the Basics

Plug Type, Voltage and Frequency Are Three Different Things

Travellers often focus only on whether the plug physically fits the socket. That is only part of the picture. You should also understand the destination's mains voltage and frequency.

Plug Type

The physical shape of the plug and socket. Worldwide plug types are commonly labelled A through O.

Voltage

The electrical supply level. A device designed only for one voltage range may need a converter when used on a different supply.

Frequency

Electricity frequency is measured in hertz. Many destinations use 50Hz or 60Hz, which can matter for certain appliances and motors.

Important: A travel adapter changes the physical plug connection. It does not automatically change the voltage supplied to your device.
Do You Need One or Both?

Travel Adapter vs Voltage Converter

These are not the same product. Knowing the difference can help prevent damaged devices and unsafe use.

  • Travel adapter: changes the physical shape of your plug so it fits the destination socket.
  • Voltage converter: changes the electrical voltage supplied to a device that is not designed for the destination voltage.
  • Dual-voltage devices: many chargers list a broad input range such as 100-240V and usually do not need a voltage converter.
  • Single-voltage appliances: may require a suitable converter if the local supply is incompatible.
Everyday Travel Electronics

Phones, Tablets, Laptops and Camera Chargers

Many modern electronic chargers are designed for international travel, but you should always check the label on the charger or power supply rather than assume.

Phone Chargers

Many modern phone chargers support a broad voltage range. If the voltage is compatible, you may only need the correct plug adapter.

Laptop Chargers

Laptop power bricks often display their accepted input voltage and frequency. Check this before plugging in abroad.

USB Chargers

A good travel charger with multiple USB ports can reduce the number of individual adapters you need to pack.

Look for wording such as INPUT 100-240V, 50/60Hz on the charger. A wide input range generally indicates that the power supply can operate across common international mains systems, but the physical plug may still need an adapter.
High-Power Appliances

Hairdryers, Straighteners, Curling Irons and Other Heating Devices

Heating appliances deserve extra attention because they can draw much more power than a phone charger and are more likely to be single-voltage.

  • Read the appliance label before travel and check its supported voltage.
  • Do not assume a simple plug adapter makes a single-voltage appliance safe on a different voltage.
  • If your accommodation supplies a hairdryer, using the locally supplied appliance is often the simplest option.
  • Check the power rating of any converter before connecting high-wattage equipment.
Worldwide Socket Standards

Common Plug Types Around the World

The IEC naming convention commonly identifies 15 plug types from A through O. Some countries use one main socket type while others use several.

Plug Type Typical Description Common Examples
Type A / BFlat parallel pins; Type B adds groundingUSA, Canada, Mexico and some other destinations
Type CTwo round pins, often called the EuroplugWidely used across Europe and elsewhere
Type E / FTwo round pins with grounding arrangementsMany European countries
Type GThree rectangular pinsUnited Kingdom, Ireland and various other destinations
Type IAngled flat pinsAustralia, New Zealand and some Pacific destinations
Type D / MThree round pins in a triangular arrangementParts of South Asia and southern Africa
Electrical Safety Abroad

Safe Use of Travel Adapters and Chargers

  • Use adapters and chargers from reputable manufacturers and inspect them for damage before use.
  • Do not overload a travel adapter with more devices or power than it is designed to handle.
  • Keep electrical equipment away from sinks, wet areas and damp surfaces.
  • Check that extension leads and power strips are suitable for the local voltage before using them.
  • Stop using equipment immediately if it becomes excessively hot, smells burnt or shows visible damage.
  • Be particularly cautious with high-power appliances such as heaters, kettles, hairdryers and straighteners.
Hotels, Airports and Cruise Ships

Charging While You Travel

Modern accommodation and transport hubs may provide USB outlets or internationally compatible sockets, but this is not guaranteed. Carrying the right adapter remains useful even when your hotel advertises USB charging.

Hotels

Some hotels provide multi-standard sockets or USB ports. Check the room information if charging several devices is important.

Airports

Charging points vary widely. Keep your own charger and adapter accessible in hand luggage rather than relying entirely on airport sockets.

Cruise Ships

Cabin sockets and permitted power accessories vary between cruise lines and ships. Check the cruise line's current electrical-item rules before packing extension leads or power strips.

Frequently Asked Questions

Travel Plug and Adapter FAQ

Do I need a travel adapter if the voltage is the same?

You may still need one if your plug does not physically fit the destination socket. Voltage compatibility and plug compatibility are separate issues.

Does a travel adapter convert voltage?

Normally, no. A basic travel adapter changes the plug connection. A voltage converter is a separate device intended to change voltage.

Will my phone charger work abroad?

Many modern phone chargers support a wide input range, but you should check the charger's printed input specification before using it abroad.

Can I use my hairdryer abroad?

Only if it is compatible with the destination supply or used with equipment specifically rated for the appliance and destination. High-power heating appliances need particular care.

How many plug types are there?

The IEC naming system commonly recognises plug types A through O, giving 15 lettered types.

Should I buy a universal travel adapter?

A quality universal adapter can be convenient for multi-country trips, but check its supported plug types, voltage rating, maximum load and whether your devices themselves are voltage-compatible.
