Hospitals & Emergency Medical Help in Spain
A practical Spain holiday healthcare guide with emergency numbers, hospital addresses, telephone contacts, public and private healthcare information, GHIC guidance and what to do when illness or injury interrupts your holiday.
Serious emergency in Spain? Call 112.
112 is Spain's general emergency number. Use it for a serious accident, severe illness or life-threatening situation rather than trying to choose a hospital yourself. Emergency services can arrange the appropriate response. This page is a travel-planning directory, not an emergency referral service.

Public hospital or private hospital?
| Type | What UK holidaymakers should know |
|---|---|
| Spanish public/state healthcare | A valid UK GHIC or eligible UK EHIC can cover medically necessary state healthcare under the applicable local rules. It does not necessarily mean every service is free. |
| Private hospital or doctor | GHIC/EHIC does not cover private healthcare. Contact your travel insurer as soon as reasonably possible. |
| Medical repatriation | Not covered by GHIC/EHIC. Appropriate travel insurance is important. |
| Hotel-arranged treatment | Do not assume it is state healthcare. Where the situation is not an emergency, ask whether the doctor, ambulance or clinic is private. |

Spain medical help FAQ
Does GHIC mean hospital treatment in Spain is always free?
No. Eligible state treatment is provided under the rules that apply to the Spanish state system. Charges can apply in circumstances where local residents would also pay.
Does GHIC cover IMED or Hospiten?
GHIC/EHIC does not cover private healthcare. IMED and Hospiten facilities identified as private in this guide should be treated as private providers for payment and insurance purposes.
What number should I call in an emergency?
Call 112 for a serious or life-threatening emergency in Spain.
Should I have travel insurance if I have a GHIC?
Yes. GHIC/EHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance and does not cover important costs such as private treatment or medical repatriation.
